Investigators compare the outcomes of patients who have undergone bilateral cataract surgery and offered different monofocal options.

This article is part of Ophthalmology Advisor’s conference coverage from the 2021 meeting of American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), held in Las Vegas from July 23 to 27, 2021. For patients who have undergone bilateral cataract surgery, monofocal progressive intraocular lens (IOL) implants provide better intermediate visual outcomes at 100 cm and 66 cm than monofocal aspheric IOL, say researchers who presented a study at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) 2021 Annual Meeting, held in Las Vegas July 23 to July 27.

The prospective, randomized study included 60 eyes of 30 patients who had undergone bilateral cataract surgery. The researchers randomly implanted either a monofocal progressive IOL or a monofocal aspheric IOL into each eye. After 3 months, they compared the measurements of uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), and distance corrected intermediate visual acuity at 100 cm and 66 cm. They conducted contrast sensitivity (CS), created visual defocus curves, and assessed whether photic phenomena were present. They evaluated patient satisfaction using the Catquest-9SF questionnaire.

Eyes that received the monofocal progressive IOL had significantly better intermediate visual outcomes at 100cm and 66cm than those that received the monofocal aspheric IOL (P <.05).

“Both IOLs provided excellent visual acuity at distance, normal contrast sensitivity and little or no impact of visual symptoms on the patients’ daily functioning,” the research shows.
